You can do lateral raises with light items (like filled water bottles and bags of rice) all the way to full gallons of water or a hammer.  These will work the sides of your shoulders.

Instead of dumbbells, you would use bags of rice, filled bottles of water, etc.  Again, the focus is on safety and proper form.

Finally, you may also consider doing overhead presses with the light items.  Please be careful with these:
  • in case you have any elbow, shoulder, or wrist injuries
  • if you select too heavy (or awkward) a weight then the risk of the item(s) falling out of your hand increases dramatically
  • if you use items with a small (or no) grip area.  This could compromise your safety

** Safety note:  Always be careful with overhead presses, and start with lighter weight (resistance) than you think you can handle.  This will increase the odds of your staying safe.
